Art of Santiago Atitlan Solola Guatemala by David Ordonez 1976

BEAUTIFUL LAGO ATITLAN

After spending the twenty-four hour period traveling from Guatemala Urban center, to Panajachel then to San Pedro and finally Santiago, nosotros were of course exhausted. Arriving right in time to check in a hotel and to drop all our bags and caput to the dock and encounter the sunset. In the back of my mind I was thinking of how the sunset was from Panajachel. The lensman in me, lamentable.

Well here is where the story gets interesting or the adventures I talked almost in my beginning Guatemalan mail service. Since my inquiry was based on the states staying the night in San Pedro, I had no hotels lined upwards in Santiago. I figured how difficult tin it exist, this is the popular boondocks there must exist several hotels. Santiago is all uphill or so it seemed! Everything we were trying to achieve was up and my poor legs were done for the day. Subsequently asking at several hotels, which obviously saw us as tourists quoted us high prices. We settled at one of the first hotels closer to the dock, Hotel Ratzan. Not saying information technology was the best, just they did negotiate to 300 Quetzales for 5 people. That is 60 Quetzales per person, or less than $8 per person for private rooms. They said costless WiFi, hot h2o (because not all hotels accept this). Well you practice get what you pay for, we were on the 4th floor, because I wanted a room with a view this meant no WiFi up in that location. Took a shower and no hot water, although after the hot day I welcomed the cold shower. When I went down stairs the guy behind the counter apologized because he didn't switch the hot water on. I complained about the WiFi he said information technology worked fine in the lobby as he walks away. No it did non work, so I looked behind the counter at the Internet box and it was OFF. Yup I turned it on! Once more $viii per person, you get what you way for.

Santigo

Lets forget the hotel, because there is more to Santiago.

There are several expats hither in Santiago likewise. I think it'due south all over Republic of guatemala. In Santiago it was more obvious because when we would ask for suggestions on restaurants they would tell u.s.a. to avoid some because information technology was gringo food due to the owner being gringos. That was several places.

Well when in doubt I hitting TripAdvisor for suggestions. Husband had still to have a typical Guatemalan plate, so I kept asking and Trip Advisor kept suggesting higher end restaurants. We were going to give in and choose one and we found out they close before the dinner crowd. Bad business for a eatery. I was starving then we settled on the number 1 pick of TripAdvisor, El Pescador, and so the hotel bellboy suggested a restaurant proverb it was Guatemalan nutrient and cheaper than El Pescador nosotros had just picked. What was the impairment in trying out the proffer of a local. We walked in after passing it up a couple of times, it was zilch to show there was a restaurant in that location, no staff correct away and no one eating there. Afterward looking at the menu nosotros realized the prices were the same every bit El Pescador, and I hate beingness lied to. Then El Pescador got our business that dark.

Exploring

We strolled the streets of Santiago at nighttime, and saw interesting things. I remember this is the town I saw the most ethnic people. Through the streets late at nighttime you meet all these cute couples, both in their traditional outfits being like any teenagers on a Saturday nighttime.

Maximon, Santiago Guatemala

Next day all I wanted to run into before we left was to see the famous Maximon. This is the number one matter you find on the internet about Santiago. When nosotros first got off the gunkhole I was asking about this Maximon. The indigenous people wouldn't tell the states how to observe him. He constantly gets moved so y'all accept to exist taken. One lady said he was " EL DIABLO " or the devil. Fifty-fifty the guy at the forepart desk of our hotel said he couldn't tell united states how to go there because information technology went against his behavior. My family didn't similar the comments they were hearing and decided they didn't want to see him either. They said it went against what they believed too, except my cousin she was upward for seeing Maximon with husband & me. My spiritual beliefs are not going to get compromised because of others thoughts on a legendary Mayan belief. I wanted to see, learn and photo this very aboriginal tradition.

SantiagoChurch

We strolled all the places to see in Santiago. They have a gorgeous church I couldn't stop photographing it and trying to imagine how it looked 200-thou years ago. Nosotros went to the market place, I don't know if it was because it was Dominicus but it was never-ending. And so many foods and anybody making some amazingly smelling nutrient.

25Centavos

We accidentally found a restaurant/fine art gallery. I asked to stop by to see the art, the creative person in me always wants to see fine art. It was endemic past a Mayan family who were to welcoming. When they found out I was an creative person they opened the doors to their house to show me some artwork of their dad. He is quite a sculptor. After talking to them nigh local food nosotros decided to have breakfast here. That was the best food I had all weekend!

Kape Ixim Che

After the swell views, the delicious food and the interesting stories we decided to take our trip back to Guatemala City. Yes we took the chicken bus back and got home in one piece. Santiago was our favorite of our trip to Panajachel but I know at that place are more than towns to explore then nosotros can't wait to explore some more!

Sololá
